Audition Notice


The Habits by Jack Bradfield tells the story of a young girl processing the loss of her brother, Matt, through the medium of a Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) game.


Jess leads the game as Dungeon Master. She is playing with two of her brother’s old school friends, Milo and Maryn.

The other characters in the play are Dennis, the owner of the board games cafe, and his new girlfriend, Bev, who both join the game.

Their choice of DnD character is indicative of their real-life personalities


Jess (F)

Playing age 16, Year 11

Grieving the loss of her older brother, Matt, and acting out his last story in his honour and to help herself heal

Alter ego: Dungeon master and goblin, Gorthalax


Maryn (F)

Playing age 21, trainee solicitor

Cambridge graduate  who once went out with Matt.

Alter ego: Winglass, a wizard


Milo (M)

Playing age 21, reluctant job-seeker

Matt’s best friend, now drifting

Alter ego: Wren, a warrior princess


Dennis (M)

Playing age 55, cafe owner,

Battling gambling addiction, business not going well and struggling financially

Alter ego: Grimble, a bard


Bev, (F)

Playing age 50, local police officer

Battling gambling addiction

Alter ego: Jezebel, thief



Each character has their own story in real life AND an alter ego in the DnD game. The play requires them to use two different voices accordingly and to make their own sound effects.


Advisory notes

Maryn and Milo share a tentative kiss

Milo cries (for real); Milo gives birth (not for real!)

Bev and Dennis share a passionate kiss.

Dennis plays the guitar and sings



No need to learn anything or have prior knowledge of DnD. The plan is to play the game with all actors and crew early in



Performances 9th - 13th February 2027 (including Saturday matinee)


Rehearsal days are Monday and Thursday evenings and Sundays afternoons.

Membership (£72 annually or £6 per month) a requirement of accepting a part.
